Sales Closer: What It Is, What They Do, and How to Become One

What is a sales closer, how they differ from SDRs and setters, daily tasks, and salary expectations in Mexico.

By the Ventaka team · Published on · 7 min read

A sales closer is the person responsible for closing the final deal with a client who has already shown interest: they make the last call or video call, resolve remaining questions, handle price objections, and get the client to sign or pay. They don't cold prospect or schedule meetings—that's the SDR and setter's job. The closer enters at the end of the process, when interest needs to be converted into a closed sale.

It's one of the best-paid sales positions on a sales team, because compensation is largely commission-based and results are measured in closed revenue. In this article, we explain what a closer actually does, how they differ from other positions in the sales funnel, and what you need to get started in Mexico.

What a sales closer does day to day

A closer's work revolves almost entirely around calls and video calls scheduled by someone else on the team (the setter). It's not a desk job with paperwork: it's conversation, one after another, throughout the day. The most common tasks are:

  • Review prospect information before the call (what interests them, what objections the setter noted, what budget they have).
  • Make the closing call: present the final offer, resolve questions, and handle price or trust objections.
  • Negotiate terms within what the company allows (timelines, payment methods, authorized discounts).
  • Log the result in the CRM: sale closed, lost, or postponed, and why.
  • Follow up with prospects who didn't close on the first call.

If you want to see the complete process step by step, including the mindset you need for the closing call, we have a specific guide on how to get your first sales job with no experience.

Handling objections is the core of the role

Most closing calls don't fall through because of price itself, but because of doubts the client doesn't dare say directly: fear of making a mistake, distrust, comparison with another option. A good closer learns to identify the real objection behind the excuse and respond to it without over-pressuring. If you want to practice this before an interview or your first day, check out the basic techniques in our guide to sales techniques for beginners in Mexico.

Closer, setter, and SDR: who does what

In a modern sales team, the funnel is usually divided into three distinct roles, and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes when looking for a sales job:

  • SDR (Sales Development Representative): finds and contacts cold prospects, qualifies them, and passes them along.
  • Setter: schedules the meeting or call with the already-qualified prospect, confirms attendance, and prepares the ground.
  • Closer: makes the final call and closes the sale.

Not all companies have the three roles separated: in small teams one person can do all three functions. But when you see a job posting that says "sales closer" specifically, it usually means you already have warm prospects waiting, not that you have to go find them. You can see the differences and requirements for each role on our pages for closer job openings and SDR job openings.

Skills companies look for when hiring a closer

No serious company asks for a specific degree for this role. What they evaluate in the interview is:

  • Clarity when speaking and ability to listen without interrupting.
  • Handling objections without sounding aggressive or desperate.
  • Discipline to follow a sales script or process without sounding robotic.
  • Tolerance for hearing "no" many times in a single day.
  • Honesty when logging results in the CRM, even when the sale is lost.

If you're going to interview for this role, check out what questions they usually ask and how to answer in our guide to sales interviews.

How much a sales closer earns in Mexico

A closer's salary almost always combines a base salary plus commission on closed sales, and in many cases the commission makes up the majority of total income. Figures vary widely depending on what product is being sold (closing a software at 2,000 pesos monthly is not the same as a 50,000 peso service), so before accepting an offer it's worth asking the exact commission percentage, when it's paid, and if there's a guaranteed minimum the first few months. We have a complete article on the topic with real ranges in how much a sales closer earns in Mexico.

When the position is on a freelance basis, also check if it includes legal benefits (IMSS, year-end bonus, vacation) or if all income depends exclusively on closing sales, with no backup. This helps you compare offers realistically and not just by the biggest number in the ad.

How to start working as a closer with no prior experience

Many companies in Mexico hire closers with no formal sales experience, as long as the person can demonstrate they can sustain a sales conversation and handle a "no" without freezing. The most effective way to get in is:

  1. Practice simulated closing calls before the interview, not by memorizing a script but by understanding the logic behind each objection.
  2. Look for clear job postings that specify the product, commission, and whether there are already scheduled prospects.
  3. Be skeptical of ads promising huge income without explaining what's being sold: we explain how to spot them in sales scams.
  4. If you decide to invest in training, review what it includes before paying, following the red flags we explain in closer training course in Mexico: real prices.

This type of position is one of the most offered in remote format, so if you live outside the cities with the most physical job openings, like Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Querétaro, or Chihuahua, don't rule out looking directly for remote positions.
