A sales advisor in Colombia sells products or services in-store, on the street, by phone, or door-to-door, almost always earning a base salary plus commission. According to Indeed, a sales advisor earns an average of $1,475,796 per month, with current offers ranging from $1.8 to $3.5 million, and to get started you typically don't need a degree—just the ability to talk to people, handle objections, and meet targets.
Sales advisor is the most common job title in the country's employment offers and the fastest entry point into the job market. Here's what the role involves, how much you can earn with figures and sources, and how to start with no experience.
What a sales advisor does (and what types exist)
The work is the same in all cases: find or serve customers, understand what they need, offer the right solution, and close the sale. What changes is the channel:
- Retail sales advisor: works in a store or shop.
- Field sales advisor: visits customers, sometimes door-to-door. If you use your own bike or car, ask about transportation allowance.
- TAT seller or pre-seller: visits neighborhood stores taking orders for mass-market products.
- Call center or retention advisor: sells by phone or prevents customers from canceling.
- Sales executive or account executive: the next level up, selling to businesses (B2B) with your own client portfolio.
Near sales roles you'll also find merchandisers (who arrange product displays) and brand ambassadors (who do demonstrations in stores), which can be good entry points.
How much does a sales advisor earn in Colombia
Here are the published figures with their sources:
- Junior sales advisor in Bogotá: base of $1.2 to $1.9 million plus variable pay (Glassdoor).
- Retail sales advisor: offers from $1.5 to $4 million depending on the company (elempleo).
- TAT seller: from minimum wage to $3–3.5 million.
- Call center sales advisor: average of $1,497,607 (Indeed).
The city makes a difference. In Barranquilla, the call center sales advisor earns an average of around $2,645,076 per month, the highest in the country according to Indeed; in Cali, the sales advisor earns around $1,663,217. What you must be paid beyond your salary
If you have an employment contract, these are non-negotiable:
- Commissions are salary: they count toward bonuses, severance, and final settlement (Colombian Labor Code, art. 127; explained by Ámbito Jurídico).
- Service bonus: paid on June 30 and December 20.
- Severance: deposited in your fund before February 15, plus 12% interest.
- Paid vacation each year.
Additionally, under Law 2466 of 2025, indefinite-term contracts are the rule and fixed-term contracts have a maximum of 4 years.
How to start with no experience: step by step
- Choose a channel. Retail and call center hire most often without experience; TAT and field roles require you to move around the city.
- Prepare your resume with measurable achievements from any customer-facing job. You'll find a template in resume for sales advisor.
- Post it on the right job boards: Computrabajo (the largest in Latin America), elempleo.com (shows salary range and contract type), Magneto, LinkedIn, and the Public Employment Service, the government's free job board with SENA and compensation funds.
- Target companies that are hiring. With open positions or sales salaries posted in 2025–2026: Bancolombia, Davivienda, Seguros Bolívar, Claro, Coca-Cola FEMSA, Postobón, Teleperformance, Konecta, Emtelco, and Foundever.
- Practice your interview. They'll ask how you handle rejection, how you prioritize opportunities, and how you manage monthly targets, and you'll very likely hear "sell me this pen." You'll find the answers in sales advisor interview.
- Ask about real commission. Many offers promise "unlimited commission": ask how much someone starting out typically earns and whether they guarantee a minimum commission in the first month.
Red flags that the offer isn't worth it
- You're paid "commission only" with no contract, even though they set your hours.
- They offer you a service contract but with set hours and a boss: that could be an employment contract (contract in reality).
- They ask for an "investment" or "initial contribution" to start.
- You earn more by recruiting others than by selling: multilevel marketing law prohibits payment for recruitment (Supersociedades, Law 1700 of 2013).

Where to grow from here
From sales advisor you can move up to account executive and later to Key Account Manager, who earns around $6 million total according to Glassdoor. Another path is remote SDR work for US or Spanish companies: the median SDR salary in Colombia is around 21,485 USD per year according to Plane. They require advanced English; Bucaramanga has the best level in the country on the EF index (518 points). We explain this in remote SDR work from Colombia.
